New Zealand Harvest Report 2025 Part 2

Updated: May 20

Focus on Sauvignon Blanc

Overview

The 2025 New Zealand wine harvest has been marked by an excellent combination of quality and volume, driven by a favorable El Niño weather pattern. Warm, dry conditions across major wine regions, particularly Marlborough, have yielded exceptional Sauvignon Blanc, the cornerstone of New Zealand's wine identity.

Vintage Conditions

The growing season featured:

  • Early budburst, leading to a longer ripening window.

  • Warm, sunny summer with low rainfall, reducing disease pressure.

  • Cool nights, preserving acidity crucial for vibrant Sauvignon Blanc flavors.

  • Extended hang time into an unusually dry autumn, promoting full flavor development.

Yields have rebounded from the lighter 2024 vintage, with most regions reporting average to above-average tonnage. The national crush is projected to approach or exceed 480,000 tonnes, although final figures are pending.

Marlborough Sauvignon Blanc 2025

Marlborough, representing 72% of the country's vineyard area, had near-ideal conditions for Sauvignon Blanc:

  • Small berries, intense flavors.

  • Vibrant profiles with tropical, citrus, and herbal notes.

  • Excellent acid balance, promising both freshness and aging potential.

Harvest began in early March, finishing by mid-April under largely benign conditions. Winemakers are comparing the vintage favorably to standout years like 2020 and 2016.

Other Regions

  • Nelson: Concentrated, fruit-driven Sauvignon Blanc with softer acidity.

  • Hawke's Bay: Riper, tropical styles, some barrel-fermented expressions.

  • Wairarapa: Textural, complex Sauvignon Blanc often made with wild fermentations.

Market Trends

  • Exports: Projected to rebound to 295 million litres by June 2025.

  • Top Markets: USA, UK, Australia continue to dominate.

  • Premiumization: Strong growth in high-end Sauvignon Blanc categories, including wild ferment and barrel-aged styles.

  • Sustainability: Over 96% of vineyards certified sustainable; regenerative practices growing.

  • Innovation: Increased use of precision viticulture, AI-assisted winemaking, and lighter-weight packaging.

Outlook

Vintage 2025 positions New Zealand to consolidate its global leadership in premium Sauvignon Blanc. Early tank samples show vibrant, expressive wines with purity, drive, and immediate appeal. With solid volumes and exceptional quality, wineries are optimistic for strong market performance in 2026 and beyond.

Summary

Vintage 2025 delivers classic New Zealand Sauvignon Blanc: vibrant aromatics, crisp acidity, and a bright, pure fruit profile, underpinning another successful chapter for the country's signature wine style.
