National Size Estimates
Recent estimates indicate that the national wine production for 2025 has fallen short of earlier expectations.
The MAPA preliminary “advance” report from 3rd October suggests a total of approximately 34.9 million hectolitres (Mhl) of wine and must. You can find more details on this Plataforma Tierra.
According to Cooperativas Agro-alimentarias, updates from 15th to 24th September, and a note on 18th October, have revised the estimates downwards from 37.5 Mhl to 34.0 Mhl, and finally to about 31.5 Mhl. This adjustment is due to the impact of heat and drought late in the season. It is prudent to consider 31.5–35 Mhl as the realistic range until final accounting is completed. More information can be found here.
Reasons for Smaller Harvest
The smaller harvest can be attributed to several factors. Notably, heat spikes in August and pockets of mildew have reduced the overall weight of the grapes. However, the quality of the wine remains generally sound. Various press outlets across Spain and the EU have reported on this downshift in production. You can read more about it in El País.
Stocks Heading Into the Crush
As we approach the crush, stocks are relatively low compared to historical averages, which is easing price pressure. The final wine stocks for 2024/25 are estimated to be around 30.6 Mhl as of 31st July. MAPA’s INFOVI has shown reduced inventories through August. Regional Colour
There are notable examples of sharper cuts in production. For instance, Jerez has reported a 45% year-on-year decrease in volume, although the fruit quality is clean, averaging around 12.5°. More details can be found on Cadena SER.
Bulk Prices — National Benchmarks
According to MAPA’s weekly bulletin for Week 40 (29th September – 5th October 2025), we can observe the following price trends:
White Base (mostly Airén & blends): The average price is €48.43/hl, which is a decrease of 4.9% compared to the previous week. However, it shows an increase of 4.6% year-on-year and 32.7% compared to the five-year average for week 40. The year-to-date mean price for 2025/26 stands at €50.23/hl. For further details, refer to the MAPA bulletin.
Red Base: The average price is €44.75/hl, reflecting a 4.2% decrease week-on-week. Year-on-year, this represents a 2.0% increase and a 10.3% rise compared to the five-year average for week 40. The year-to-date mean price is €45.23/hl. More information is available in the MAPA bulletin.
Takeaway: After a summer of tight crop discussions and lighter stocks, early October has seen a slight easing week-on-week. However, prices remain firmer year-on-year, particularly for white wines.
Regional & Grade Pointers
Castilla-La Mancha (La Mancha / IGP)
Castilla-La Mancha continues to set the price for Spanish bulk wines. Current price boards by plaza indicate that whites are trading above last year’s prices, while reds have seen modest increases. SeVi’s week-10 (2025/26) “precio testigo” infographic provides a comparative view across different regions, including Mancha, Valencia, and Extremadura. For more insights, visit SeVi.
Grades
Most base deals are still centred around 10.5–11.5°. Typical uplifts of €0.5–1.0/hl are observed for tidy lots and clean analyses. White wines and colour-stable reds with a minimum of 12° are commanding a premium when available, especially given the thin supply from drought-affected areas. This premium pattern aligns with MAPA’s national firmness on white wines and SeVi plaza spreads. For additional details, refer to the MAPA bulletin.
Trade Flow Backdrop
Exports H1-2025
In the first half of 2025, Spain exported approximately 997 million litres of wine, valued at €1,444.7 million. The OEMV has noted that both bulk volumes and values are up year-on-year, while packaged wines have seen a decline. Average prices have improved for both categories.
As we move forward, understanding these trends will be crucial for navigating the evolving landscape of wine importation and distribution.
This post aims to provide a comprehensive overview of the current state of wine production and pricing in Spain for 2025. By keeping abreast of these developments, I hope to assist in making informed decisions in the wine trade.
